Plans to build padel tennis courts and new cafe in south side sport centre expansion

Plans have been unveiled for a major expansion at a sports club in Glasgow’s south side.

Proposals from Newlands Lawn Tennis club could see the car park beside the facilities on Mochrum Road transform into Glasgow's first ever padel tennis courts.

They have also proposed extending the building in order to open a cafe at the entrance to sports centre.

The planning application, submitted the racket club reads, says: "The club are to offer the padel facility to club members and also to the general public on a ‘pay per play’ basis.

“The café will also be available to non-members as a community facility, with the entrance to the members’ club being beyond the café control point. Access through the padel court fence will be by remote access lock.”

Padel, a cross between tennis and squash, is played by four people on an enclosed court about a third of the size of a tennis court.

There are currently around 100 padel clubs in the UK but the game is well established in Spain, where there are 6million players, and padel is now one of the fastest growing sports in Europe.

Currently only six padel courts exist in Scotland, with the closest one to Glasgow being found at the West of Scotland Padel Club in Ayrshire.

In 2019, Glasgow-born tennis champ Andy Murray invested an unspecified stake in Game4padel, an Edinburgh-based group that plans, constructs and maintains padel courts.
