Plans to build 'affordable' apartments on former pub site given the go-ahead

Plans to build 27 'affordable' apartments on the site of a former Whitefield pub have been given the go-ahead.

The Lord Clive closed its doors back in January following an unsuccessful campaign to save it.

The building has since been demolished, leaving the Hillock estate without a pub.

Locals who tried to save the boozer described it as the hub of the community, and many were left devastated by its closure.

Work on building a block of apartments is expected to begin next month after Bury Council gave the plans the green light.

Under the proposals, the three-storey building will comprise of 21 one-bedroom apartments and six two-bedroom apartments.

The homes are being built by Watson Homes and, when finished, will be made available at 'affordable rents' by Onward Homes.

A total of 30 parking spaces will also be made available at the site, off Mersey Drive.

The apartment block is expected to be completed by February 2022.

Last summer, The Lord Clive's landlady, Leanne Doherty, was given just four weeks to find a new job - as well as a home for her and her four children.

A spokesman for JW Lees, which owned the pub, blamed 'difficult trading conditions' on the decision to sell.

But both Leanne and customers say it was the lack of promised investment that caused the drop in footfall.

More than 450 people signed a petition calling for the Lord Clive to remain open.

It was eventually handed a stay of execution before being forced to close its doors at the beginning of this year.

Rob Watson, director at Watson Homes, said: “We worked closely with Onward Homes on these plans to provide much-needed, high-quality homes for the local area.

"We are mindful that the former pub was a key part of the community and we hope that these new homes provide future great memories for many.”
