Plans to almost double Edinburgh village in size with huge housing development

Plans are to be put forward to almost double the size of an Edinburgh village with a new CALA housing development.

The Edinburgh developer has given a notice concerning the land that stretches behind Currie, with the hopes of building a large number of new homes.

Launching the proposals for the Currievale development, a consultation is due to get underway with the local community over the coming weeks.

Full details of the plans are due to be made available on June 22 (Tuesday), with locals encouraged to get in touch and ask questions during a live online conversation.

However, so far CALA have confirmed the proposals includes a "public transport corridor" that will link the A70 west of Newmills Road through to Riccarton Mains Road and beyond.

Derek Lawson, strategic land director with CALA Homes (East), said: “We’re keen to hear views on the future sustainable growth of the A70 corridor. The site at Currievale provides an opportunity to prepare a cohesive masterplan for the area.

“CALA views this proposal as more than just a development site, but as an opportunity to create wider benefit for the existing community.”

The developer has pushed a number of public transport links that could be created through the development, with hopes it will appeal to the council's environmental goals.

However, the plans are expected to be controversial to many local residents, after similar proposals in Balerno received over 200 objections.

The site just off of Ravelrig Road in Balerno had been earmarked by developers for 350 new houses, as well as a community building and health centre.

However, it was rejected by the council for a number of access and transport reasons, with local residents writing that it would have an adverse strain on already overwhelmed local services.

The consultation for Currievale will run until July 13 to allow locals to give their thoughts, and can be found here.
