Plans submitted to turn going-out hotspot in south London into skyscrapers

Towers ranging up to 20 storeys tall could be built on a popular nightlife spot in south London.

Plans to redevelop two sites in Brixton have officially been submitted to the local council. One is currently home to the food market and bar mecca Pop Brixton.

Lambeth Council has partnered with developer London Square to build flats, some of which will be social housing, along with spaces for shops and market traders, a community hub and workspaces.

But some local traders at Pop Brixton recently told the Standard they feared the area was being gentrified by rising house prices.

The proposed scheme at 49 Brixton Station Road would replace shipping container market Pop Brixton. It would see two new tower blocks of homes built at 18 storeys and 20 storeys tall. Each flat will have a private balcony.

There will also be a six-storey building with a shared roof terrace for residents and a space for shops and workspaces.

Just around the corner International House at Canterbury Crescent has also been earmarked for development. It’s currently used as office spaces, a rooftop restaurant and sauna run by 3space on a meanwhile use.

The existing office and rooftop venue will be refurbished and extended upwards by two storeys, creating 69 private homes on top of the building.

Overall, the scheme would deliver 288 new homes, 40 per cent of which will be affordable. London Square said it could boost London’s dwindling housing supply.

Ricardo Rossetti, Development Director at London Square, commented: “We have spent many months listening to the community to understand their priorities and their views have helped shape the plans.

“The development will provide a mix of new homes alongside workspaces and community space, as well as improvements to the streets and areas that local people will use every day.

“The delivery of housing in London is at critically low point, so we are proud that our partnership with the Council will deliver much needed affordable homes in the heart of Brixton and help tackle housing pressures in Lambeth.”

Councillor Danny Adilypour, Deputy Leader at Lambeth Council, said the scheme has listened to “extensive engagement” with the community.

Cllr Adilypour said: “This regeneration scheme is about delivering a stronger, fairer Brixton, one that provides much-needed genuinely affordable social rent homes, supports local businesses and celebrates our town’s unique identity.”

A decision will be made on the planning application in March 2026.
