Plans submitted to convert town centre commercial property into new flats

Plans have been submitted to North Lanarkshire Council to build new flats in Wishaw town centre.

The proposals for a change of use of commercial property in Kirk Road to form 12, one bedroom flats was submitted to the council’s planning department.

In the supporting statement, provided by Design Practice Architects, it states the 12 new flats would be furnished on the first and second floor of the three storey building, with the bottom floor being used for retail.

The statement continues: “The ground floor retail use will be unaffected.

“The upper floors were originally residential but later became offices although that use ceased around 10 years ago and since then have been vacant.

“The refurbishment of these properties will bring back an active use into the town centre which help sustain the commercial centre.”

According to the proposals, access to the flats would be obtained via two ‘close’ systems which provide access to Kirk Road and the back court area.

From the rear area there is direct access to an adjacent car park.

There is no dedicated car parking provision within the development.

Currently there have been on letters of objection or support to the proposals.

The planning statement concludes: “The proposal will provide a high quality of development which will integrate successfully into the local area, avoid harm to neighbourhood amenity by relating well to the existing context and avoiding adverse impact on existing or proposed properties.

“The proposal refurbishes a vacant property to an acceptable residential use which will help in the overall rejuvenation of a viable town centre.”
