Plans submitted for student accommodation with almost 400 rooms, a gym and cinema room in Gorgie

Plans have been formally put forward for brand new student accommodation in Gorgie which comes complete with 400 bedrooms, a gym and a cinema room.

Turley are now seeking planning permission from the City of Edinburgh Council to erect a seven-storey purpose-built development on Westfield Road – at the site of the old Sterling Furniture store.

The proposed development would include 394 student bedrooms made up of shared flats ranging from six to nine occupants, and other self-contained studio flats.

There would also be common areas such as a gym, a private cinema room, a games room and study spaces along with a large landscaped courtyard.

The plans outline that there would be up to 400 cycle parking spaces to the rear of the development, while car parking will be limited to four spaces, including two disabled spaces.

Commenting on the site, the application states: "There is a furniture retail store, office building and a car park within the site. The office is currently occupied, however the lease is due to expire. The furniture retail store has been vacated.

"The site is located to the west of Edinburgh's city centre, south of Murrayfield Stadium and the Edinburgh to Glasgow railway line."

They add: "There are footways on both sides of Westfield Road and Westfield Avenue. Gorgie Road is approximately a three minute walk from the site which forms part of the local town centre and provides various local amenities. The Water of Leith, which is located north-west of the site, forms part of a Core Path network."

The applicants say they have been consulting with people in the area about the plans.

A presentation was provided to the Gorgie Dalry Community Council at their February meeting while a public exhibition was also held at the Gorgie Dalry Stenhouse Church of Scotland in January.

The City of Edinburgh Council will now consider the application.
