Plans to turn a community facility into a nursery and family learning centre have been submitted.
Plans have been sent to North Lanarkshire Council’s planning department to turn Wishawhill community centre into a new nursery costing approximately £500,000.
The centre had been identified as part of the council’s 1140 hours expansion programme for childcare after previous plans for a new facility at Heathery Park were deemed unviable due to risk of flood.
A design brief has now been prepared both for the centre and consultation with current users of the centre has already taken place, with four of the five groups identifying an appropriate alternative location for their activities.
Following the decision to change the centre’s use, Wishawhill’s Labour councillor Kenneth Duffy said: “I’m delighted that Wishawhill community centre has been chosen for our Labour administration’s ambitious plans for childcare in the area.
“The centre is much loved by many and this proposal will help secure its long-term future for the benefit of our community.
“This £500,000 investment is welcome news and I look forward to discussing these plans with residents in the coming months once a more detailed proposal is put before the Education Committee.”
Conservative councillor Nathan Wilson added: “A high quality nursery education is hugely important for the future of our children and it is vital that the enhanced and permanent early years provision for local families in Wishawhill is delivered at the earliest possible opportunity.”
