Plans submitted for new homes on site of former Cleland Miners Welfare Club

Plans have been submitted for new homes on the site of the former Cleland Miners Welfare Club.

The proposals for a residential development , with associated parking and infrastructure, was submitted to North Lanarkshire Council’s planning department.

If approved, the plans, by Rosewood Homes on behalf of Clyde Valley Housing Association, would see 18 new homes being built on the Cleland Main Street site.

Cleland councillor Louise Roarty said: “The transformation of the site would see affordable housing in Cleland which is what we are badly needing. The building itself was demolished at the start of the year.”

The club, which had been a feature in the village for decades, was forced to close its doors for the last time in August 2017. At that time, the Wishaw Press reported that former club lease holders Paul and Gerard Gallacher blamed the lack of footfall at the club for the sudden closure.

They said this meant they did not have the funds required to maintain the building either and had no other choice but to close down.

The closure of the Cleland Club was described as “heartbreaking” for a local boxing coach. Ronnie Blackburn heaped praise on the club lease holders for their support of Cleland Miners ABC but admitted he was gutted that the club would be without a venue for their house shows.

Councillor Roarty also has fond memories of the club in its heyday.

She added: “For many years it was the hub of all the activity in the village.

“People had to queue up from about half past five to get into the place on a Friday or a Saturday night.

“I remember the lease holders allowing the community council to have fun days in there and any group in the village who were having a charity night in there they would always get it for free.”
