Plans submitted for new Edwalton school include car park, play areas and a 39-place nursery

Plans have been submitted for a new multi-million pound primary school in Edwalton.

The school  is being built on the Sharphill housing development near to Wheatcroft Island.

The new school, which will be part of The Spencer Academies Trust, is set to be completed in September 2020.

It will offer 45 places at first admission with 15 places in the other year groups.

This will grow to 315 places in total, with the option at a later date to extend this further to 420 as the housing development grows over the coming years.

In an application, submitted to Rushcliffe Borough Council, it outlines the plans.

It will include a two-storey school, playing fields, car parking and play areas.

Plans also include a canopy over the entrance area and a covered play area in the nursery.

The new school will be built in two phases. The first for up to 315 pupils plus a 39-place nursery.

The second phase will start when the need arises and will increase the capacity of the school to 420 places.

A design and access statement by Arc Partnership described the proposed building.

It said: "The nursery and foundation unit face east to take advantage of the morning sun and are located conveniently to where parents access the site.

"All children will access the school building via the playground and from there to their own classrooms.

"The building will be faced in a combination of brick gable ends with adjoining rendered walls. Windows and doors will be powder coated metal along with rainwater goods and building eaves.

"The roof will be curved metal standing seam. As the building will be viewed from a higher ground to the west towards Sharphill Wood.

"Care has been taken to ensure the roof is attractive to look upon with a minimum of service protrusions. Most of these will be terminate in the walls via coloured louvres rather than the roof."

The new primary school will be a linked primary to the Rushcliffe Academy.

Chairman of the Children and Young People’s Committee, Councillor Philip Owen added: “I am delighted that the planning application has now been submitted on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council and the Spencer Academies Trust for the new school in Sharphill.

"The proposed design makes sure that children are given an environment in which they can enjoy their learning and achieve their potential, and will be a much-needed asset for the area.”
