Plans submitted for new apartment block on site of former Wythenshawe pub which was shut down by police

Plans have been submitted for an "affordable" apartment block at the site of a former Wythenshawe pub.

A new proposal could see 40 apartments built at the junction of Greenwood Road and Gladeside Road in Benchill, if planning permission is granted.

The land has been unoccupied since the demolition of the Greenwood Tree Pub in 2007.

Plans include the construction of a two or three-storey building, with 25 one-bedroom and 15 two-bedroom apartments.

CGI pictures show a three-storey block with light-coloured brick work, long glass windows and balcony's on the corner of the apartment building.

A number of plans have been submitted to transform the derelict site into apartments since 2007, but none have ever been completed.

The former Tetley's estate pub was built in the 1970s, and was once a popular, family-run pub.

In the mid-2000s it was plagued by gang crime, which was rife in Wythenshawe at the time.

During a routine licensing check in 2005, officers uncovered a gun and class A drugs inside the Greenwood Tree pub.

Following the arrests of three men and a woman, the pub was closed down by police.

Two years later it was demolished, and the site has remained empty ever since.

Liverpool-based construction firm Satplan, have submitted the plans on behalf of Manchester finance broker, ECS Capital Limited.

Geoff Underhill, company solicitor and spokesperson for ECS Capital, told Place North West : "We’ve achieved a more efficient layout and developed a more contemporary façade whilst respecting the area’s predominantly red brick characteristics.

"A local housing association has advised us on their preferred mix of homes, their tenure and design characteristics so that we can provide an affordable product to local people."
