Plans submitted for first phase of major housing development in Nailsea

Detailed plans have been submitted for hundreds of new homes on land in Nailsea.

Outline planning permission was granted at appeal for up to 450 homes on a 24 hectare site at Youngwood Lane last year.

North Somerset Council failed to reach a decision on the application for Youngwood Lane in time, so applicant Mactaggart and Mickel launched an appeal.

An inspector found in their favour and permission was granted in November.

The site has now been sold to housing giant Taylor Wimpey which has put forward detailed plans for the first phase of the scheme to build 168 homes.

The scheme also includes plans for new roads around development and drainage ponds and landscaping.

A mix of homes are planned for the development with some going on the open market and some being available for rent.

There would be a mix of homes ranging from one-bedroom flats to four-bedroom houses, including up to 50 affordable homes.

There is a further 282 properties to come in phases two and three with new highways routes and ponds on the farmland off Youngwood Lane/Netherton Lane.

The detailed application is due to be discussed by Nailsea Town Council planning committee later this month.

But the matter will then have to go before North Somerset Council's planning and regulatory committee.

Nailsea is expected to see thousands of new homes built over the coming decade.

Government housing targets say that 25.000 new homes need to be provided across North Somerset by 2036, around 3,000 of which could be in Nailsea.

However following criticism of the Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) - a blueprint setting out how the Bristol region will develop over the next two decades - by the Government, North Somerset Council has decided to withdraw from the process and go it alone,

The authority is now drawing up its own strategic framework for the district.
