Plans submitted for 1700 homes at new Edinburgh Park development

Property developer Parabola has submitted plans for the residential phase of a new zero carbon quarter in Edinburgh.

Last year the firm, which owns the 43 acres of undeveloped land to south of Edinburgh Park, began work on speculative office buildings on the site this year.

Its new planning application to City of Edinburgh Council includes 1700 new homes, 350,000 sq ft of commercial facilities including a 170-bedroom apartment hotel, a public park, play areas and gardens and a public square at Edinburgh Park railway station.

Parabola has promised 434 affordable and tenure-blind homes - 25% of the total - matching the quality and the proportions of the other one, two and three bedroomed units.

The ongoing commercial phase - 1 New Park Square - includes one million sq ft of offices, sport and leisure facilities including football pitches and tennis courts, shops, bars, restaurants, a health centre and performance arts space. Parabola says it is the first speculative office development in Scotland which will be capable of operating carbon and emissions free. Work is to restart when coronavirus restrictions are lifted and it is expected to be completed in late 2021.

A marketing suite for the project - named Mach1 after its designer, the artist David Mach - will display sculpture including returning Sir Eduardo Paolozzi’s Vulcan.

Peter Millican OBE, owner and founder of Parabola, said: “Submitting the planning application for next phase of Edinburgh Park is a significant milestone for the Parabola team. We remain confident that our vision for a carbon neutral quarter of the city with well-being, the highest quality design in an unrivalled setting will create a world class place to work and to live at Edinburgh Park.

"The support and guidance of the leadership of the city council throughout the planning process has been greatly encouraging, we look forward to working with them to deliver this next phase of our vision.”

Commercial agents JLL and C&W will advise on the marketing and availability of the accommodation.
