Plans revealed to end the League Two 2019/20 season as Leeds United's wait continues

League Two have agreed to cancel the remainder of the 2019/20 season according to the BBC.

The fourth tier of English football has been suspended since Mid-March which has created growing financial uncertainty.

Whilst the Premier League continue to hold discussions over completing the 2019/20 season behind closed doors, the financial implications for League Two clubs would be catastrophic due to their dependence on matchday revenue.

As a result, the BBC claim that League Two clubs have agreed to call time on this season and settle the final table with a weighted points-per-game system.

Only five points separate Crewe Alexandra, who lead the table, and Cheltenham Town in fifth.

Whilst the top three clubs will be promoted to League One, the final promotion place will still be decided via the play-offs.

The report states that clubs have agree to the usual format of a two-legged semi-final and then the play-off final to determine the fourth club to earn promotion.

Equally, one club will be relegated into the Conference, with three points separating Stevenage in 24th and Macclesfield Town in 23rd, although the former holds a game in hand.

In League One, a decision is yet to be reached on whether the season will be completed, as there is a clear split between those chasing promotion and those fighting relegation.

On Thursday Peterborough United, Oxford United, Sunderland, Fleetwood, Portsmouth and Ipswich Town released a joint statement saying they had "no desire for voiding the season, points-per-game scenarios or letting a computer decide our footballing fate".

During a video conference on Friday, the remaining 23 League One clubs couldn't reach a united front over the 2019/20 season and discussions will continue.
