Plans put forward to help save Sefton's coastline from plastic pollution

Sefton Council has drawn up plans to completely cut out single-use plastics.

The Labour -led council's new plastics strategy outlines the goal of eliminating plastic waste within its offices, but also aims to reduce waste through conditions for suppliers, and by raising awareness in the community.

Should Sefton's Cabinet agree, it would see the authority and its more than 5,000 staff committed to sending no plastic packaging to landfill from its premises in two years.

The plan aims to improve Sefton's coastline, as well as help create a more sustainable future for all (Liverpool Echo)

The plan follows a motion put to full council on the issue in May last year from Labour councillor Diane Roscoe.

Cllr Roscoe, of Blundellsands ward, said: " Sefton has approximately 22 miles of coastline, which is enjoyed by residents and visitors and plays host to some of the rarest plants and animals in the country.

"Plastic pollution in the sea is a symptom of a more systemic issue originating on land and related to the design, the use and the disposal of plastic items, particularly single-use plastic.

"If we do not change our behaviour, a threefold increase is predicted in the amount of plastics in the ocean between 2015 and 2025."

If approved, the Council will commit to an ongoing communications plan to inform people living in the borough of the reasons for phasing out such plastics and to encourage them to switch to alternatives.

The plan will be decided upon at a Cabinet meeting next month.
