Plans lodged to turn abandoned Swansea Boys' Club that's remained untouched for years into homes

Plans have officially been lodged to transform the old Swansea Boys' Club, which has become a magnet for vandalism and break-ins, into housing.

Swansea Council has been asked to give the go-ahead to turn the deteriorating building in Mayhill into a residential development made up of 23 units.

The plans, submitted by Asbri Planning on behalf of applicant Amit Mohan, of Cardiff-based Lifestyle Dimensions Ltd, read that the vision for the scheme is to "make the most of the panoramic views overlooking the city and to bring the building back into beneficial use with a viable and attractive development".

And it gives an insight into how the building looks at present.

Planning documents read: "The building first opened in the 1920s and became a successful youth club up until its eventual closure.

"The building is now in a poor state of repair, attracting anti-social behaviour and has become an eye-sore in recent times. "

Building inspection reports note the building is generally in a "very poor condition", with vandalism and break-ins evident throughout, holes in the roof and missing windows. and large amounts of feral pigeon droppings throughout.

Having opened in 1922, Swansea Boys' Club was once one of the most successful clubs on the Swansea and West Wales football scene, and once could count around 500 members on its books. It closed in the mid '90s.

Swansea Council's planning department will now consider the application.

But further to the pre-planning inquiry stage, documents for which were submitted in January, Lifestyle Dimensions say council planners welcomed the application within their feedback, given the long-term vacancy of the existing building.

"The principle of the change of use of the building to residential flats is accepted and would be supported," documents read.
