Plans lodged for third Co-op store in Notts village

Plans have been lodged to build a Co-operative store at a former car garage in Market Warsop - despite there already being two other shops across the parish.

The proposals would see Oak Garage, at the junction of Hetts Lane and Church Street, converted into a Lincolnshire Co-operative branch with the aim to "enhance the retail provisions" in the community.

Submitted by Framework Architects on behalf of the Co-operative chain, the goal of the store would be to serve as a "top-up" shop for residents rather than a "destination-type" centre - despite there being no large supermarket there.

The documents say: "The proposed convenience store is designed and located to respond to the local community.

"The size of the convenience store is sustainable within the local community, and does not depend on a wider catchment area for its sustainability.

"It will enhance the range of retail and community provisions to the growing local community, and provides an appropriate relationship with Church Street."

The new shop would be located just 0.3 miles away from a National Co-op store on High Street, while demolition work began in the autumn to demolish The Gate pub on Mansfield Road - which will eventually become a Central England Co-operative store.

Warsop residents have called for a larger supermarket in the area for years, and came close in 2010 when plans for a Tesco at the former Strand Cinema site, also on Church Street, were submitted.

The Tesco plans eventually fell through and made way for the upcoming Strand Development, which means a number of retail units will come to the area, including Heron Foods.

Some residents have branded the Co-op plans as "ridiculous" online, saying that the parish needs a supermarket "not another Co-op" - particularly in close range to the two other stores.

Tania Barlow, commenting on a Warsop community page, told Mansfield Live: "This is ridiculous. We need a supermarket like Aldi or Lidl, not another Co-op."

But others think it would be a good move by having a shop at the garage site.

Nigel Pike said: "I think changing the garage to a supermarket of any form is a good for Warsop.

"It’s unfortunate that it’s another co-op but it’s different to the others, and in a few years who knows, it could be another supermarket once the building is built."

Plans will be considered at a later date by Mansfield District Council's planning committee.
