Plans for a retail unit on the site of the former Stuart Hotel in East Kilbride have been submitted.
The proposal for a mixed-use retail unit (Class 1) with rear service yard, landscaping and hoarding has been lodged with South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) on behalf of the Scotsman Group.
Plans show part of the 32,000 sq ft site earmarked for a shop unit with the remainder pencilled in as a 'future development site'.
The Stuart Hotel was a favourite in East Kilbride, hosting hundreds of weddings and parties alike, until its demolition in 2013.
It had fallen into disuse after being closed down a number of years prior.
Since its demolition the large site next to the bus station in the town centre has lain empty.
Glasgow-based letting agents, Gerald Eve, said in 2014 owners G1 Group (now the Scotsman Group) were proposing to construct a retail unit for potential tenants, however, if the right buyer comes along, they would sell.
The G1 Group were granted planning permission in September 2009 to transform the derelict Stuart Hotel into a luxury hotel. The multi-million pound development was to include a nightclub, restaurant, bars, and a gym.
But the group claimed in 2011 it could not follow through with the plans because of the financial climate, and the situation became a major concern for the town with an urgent demolition notice eventually served on the leisure and nightclub giant.
In its heyday, with its grand ballroom and ‘posh’ cocktail bar, the Stuart Hotel was one of the country’s most popular wedding and social venues.
The first new hotel in the town was opened by Scottish and Newcastle Brewers in 1959.
The hotel continued to be a favourite for years to come, and its 'sunken garden' was enjoyed by many in East Kilbride.
South Lanarkshire Council previously said they would "welcome discussions" on proposals that would see the vacant and prominent site being developed, "adding to the regeneration of East Kilbride Town Centre".
