Plans lodged for a specialist wine and spirit shop in Jesmond

Plans for a specialist wine and spirit shop in Jesmond have been lodged with Newcastle City Council.

The off-licence “selling premium and artisan wine and spirits” has been proposed for the former Leather Mob shop on Clayton Road in the Newcastle suburb.

An application by the Jesmond Wine Company for a premises licence says the shop plans to open between 9am and 6pm every day.

It says: “A CCTV system shall be installed and maintained at the premises and shall be operating at all times that the premises are conducting licensable activity.

“An age verification scheme, such as Challenge 25, shall be operated at the premises.

“No noise from the premises shall be audible at the nearest noise sensitive premises so as not to cause an unreasonable nuisance.

“No glass material or bottles shall be deposited in any skip, bin or other container of a like nature, located in the open air outside of the premises between the hours of 10.30pm and 8am and any such skip, bin or container shall not be removed from the premises between those hours.

“The premises licence holder shall ensure that all relevant members of staff receive training in their responsibilities under the Licensing Act 2013.”

A previous Jesmond wine shop closed its doors at the end of last year after its owner decided to retire.

Richard Granger Wines had been trading from its shop at West Jesmond Metro Station in Newcastle for 50 years.

It was bought by Guest Wines, which acquired the business’ website and customer list. However, the acquisition did not include the shop, which closed for good in 2020.
