Plans go in to create flats for more than 40 students on upper floors of this city building

Plans have been revealed to create accommodation for more than 40 students on the upper floors of a prominent city centre building.

Developers want to revamp the upper floors of a property at 11-13 Thurland Street, on the opposite side of the road to New Look.

They want to refurbish and make improvements to ground floor shop fronts and also demolish upper floors of the building, allowing for the construction of four new storeys.

This is expected to provide 42 student flats, plans have revealed.

Some passersby said the building was in an ideal location.

Rachel Fox, 26, of Mansfield, a teaching assistant, said: “It’s central to the shopping area, close to the nightlife, surrounded by nice architectural buildings with easy access to transport.”

Chenga Chivunga, 21, of Lenton, a Nottingham Trent University law and criminology graduate, said more student accommodation was needed but "at a more affordable price".

"The more inner-city you are, the more expensive it is," she added.

The plans make clear that the proposals will not involve the loss of employment or business use.

The proposals also involve extending the back of the property at ground floor level to create a storage area.

And planning documents say the move would provide "suitable city centre living provision in an appropriate location".

Tim Leu, 45, of St Ann's, runs Unique Nails and Beauty, a salon which is on the corner of Thurland Street and Lincoln Street, underneath where the new apartments are planned.

"If the students need it, it's good," he said.

"It's their (the developers) own choice. I really do not know what's going on."

The planning application was submitted to Nottingham City Council on behalf of Crowndale Properties Ltd.

The planning agent, listed in the documents, was Mr Boyd McAfee, of Harrison McAfee Ltd.
