Plans go in for nearly 600 homes on huge Mersey development site

Plans for nearly 600 new homes have been put forward as part of a huge £155m Merseyside development project.,

Earlier this year, the ECHO reported on the initial plans for a 1200-home development in Wirral called Bromborough Wharf. The plans come from Bromborough Riverside Regeneration Ltd and relate to a large area of land off Dock Road South. The development site is to the south of Bebington, to the north of Eastham and borders the River Mersey.

Now the first outline planning application has been submitted to Wirral Council. The application is seeking outline planning permission for up to 564 houses and associated infrastructure on the one hectare B plot on the site.

In its submission, Bromborough Riverside Regeneration said: "Bromborough Wharf will transform a derelict site and create a highly sustainable community that will be a desirable place to live for generations to come. A key part of the proposals is to create a beautifully landscaped promenade overlooking the River Mersey.

"This is a unique opportunity to benefit resident health and wellbeing by opening up a new riverside space for both exercise and relaxation, which will be accessible to the entire Bromborough community."

The site has already been cleared of the majority of buildings and structures and is currently used for storage and stock piling of inert soils.

If approved, the homes being built will be a mix of 1,2,3 and 4 bed houses and apartments targeted at families, couples and first-time buyers along with specialist older persons housing to "support a sustainable housing mix across the whole life cycle."

As well as the hundreds of new homes, the application proposes a series of new green open spaces which will all be connected via a number of pedestrian links.

This includes two community spaces for gathering, play areas and a new park in the middle of the site. It is hoped the development of the wider site could create around 1,300 jobs.

Commenting earlier this year, Bjorn Martenson of Bromborough Riverside Regeneration Ltd said: " Bromborough Wharf will support the council’s ambition to have a brownfield first approach for new housebuilding in the Wirral and deliver a housing mix that caters for all ages and local needs.

"We’re looking to create a sustainable riverside community that will be a desirable place to live for generations to come, and we encourage local people to get involved in our consultation and tell us what they think about the plans."
