Plans go in for glass-fronted office block near Nottingham Railway Station

The multi-million-pound regeneration of the south side of the city could be boosted further after plans were lodged to build a glass-fronted office block on derelict land near the city's railway station.

The seven-storey development is planned at the junction of Arkwright Street and Crocus Street, next to the tram lines.

Nottinghamshire Live previously reported the development was planned to be built on land which was previously used as an operations base for the construction of the NET lines two and three.

The development is designed to support around 1,150 office workers.

It would form part of the ongoing transformation of the south side of the city, which will include a revamped Broadmarsh Shopping Centre and new HMRC office block at Unity Square.

The plans have been submitted by the city council.

Businesses said the plans for the development could boost trade.

Lewis Townsend, head of marketing at the Castle Rock Brewery, said: "We are delighted to hear of further developments in an area that has gone without for quite some time.

"Along with the Unity Square plans, as well as the improvements on Carrington Street, we’re hopeful that this will drive more people to the south side of the city centre.

"We have three unique pubs in the immediate area: the Barley Twist, the Vat & Fiddle and the Canalhouse, and separate to that there is Beerheadz adjacent to the train station, so visitors and office workers will be well catered for in terms of food, coffee and beer."

Senior business leaders also gave their backing.

Lorraine Baggs, head of investment at Invest in Nottingham, said: “It’s fantastic to see that the Crocus Place scheme is moving forward.

"The development will provide fresh Grade A office space, which we’re confident will attract substantial interest from prospective occupiers over the next few months.

"2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Nottingham – there’s £2bn worth of development taking place in the south side alone which will take the city to the next level in terms of investment opportunities.”

Jeff Allen, chairman of Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID), added: “This potential development is good news for Nottingham as our lack of Grade A office space has limited our ability to attract new businesses to the city.

"We hope that plans are approved and that if letting the building is successful, new investors in Grade A office space will be attracted to the city.“

Speaking previously, councillor Jon Collins, leader of the Nottingham City Council, said: "We know there is a desire for more top-quality office space to bring more jobs and employees to the city and hopefully from across the Midlands.

"Our proposed transformation of Crocus Place will add to that being offered by Unity Square, City Buildings and Bildurn on Station Street and create a busy office quarter of the city, not just in office space but in the look of the building.

"We are confident that this new development will be a great success and addition to the Nottingham landscape."
