Plans for new shipping container food court in Newport have been rejected

Plans for a new street-food style food court in Newport have been rejected after the council said the applicants had "not demonstrated the need" for the venue.

Proposals for an outdoor food court in the What! store car park in Rogerstone were first lodged with Newport City Council back in April.

In May Yard Group Ltd, the company behind the plans, told WalesOnline they hoped the venue would "attract people from all over" towns and cities outside Newport if its application was successful.

But council planners last week refused the application, which they said "has not demonstrated need for the proposed development."

They also said the plans did not show that there were "no sequentially preferable sites within the city centre or other defined centres."

They added that the applicants had not shown that "sufficient parking is available within the site to serve both the proposed development and existing retail unit.

"In the absence of robust information it cannot be determined that the proposed development would not result in a harmful impact on highway and pedestrian safety," they added.

The venue's plans included shipping container-style food stalls serving different types of world cuisine, as well as a licenced bar, coffee shop and live music. It had been given a licence to serve alcohol prior to the rejection of its planning application.
