Plans for new national cup competition in advanced stages for non-league sides

Plans for a new national cup competition for non-league sides in Scotland are gathering pace - with the Scottish Junior FA set to back it to the tune of £80,000.

More than 200 clubs across the various non-league levels from Highland League and Lowland League at tier five through to the East, West and South of Scotland would be involved in the tournament which would take the place of the Junior Cup.

SJFA bosses hope to have their proposals rubber stamped in time to begin next season.

The Junior Cup is one of the oldest competitions in world football having run since 1886 and this season’s second round takes place later this month.

But after the amalgamation of the old junior leagues into the Scottish football pyramid two years ago a number of big clubs have withdrawn from the SJFA’s premier competition.

Now they want a fresh tournament to bring it into line with the new non-league set-up.

A statement from the association read: “With over 200 clubs across the country it is hoped this ambitious move will capture the imagination of clubs and supporters throughout the Scottish game.

“Funded by the Scottish Junior FA with a financial backing of £80,000 it underlines the association’s commitment in creating a prestige national competition for all.

“Initial discussions with other leagues and associations have taken place and we are encouraged with the positive feedback.”

Next month marks the 135th anniversary of the SJFA. To mark the occasion the association will make payments of £1,350 to four organisations in each of the north, east and west regions of the country.
