Plans for new McDonald's near White Rose branded 'terrible, worrying and unsightly'

Plans for a new drive thru McDonald's in Leeds have been met with a number of strong objections from people who live nearby.

The fast food giant has submitted proposals to transform the vacant former Harvester pub on the junction of Dewsbury Road and Wide Lane into a modern restaurant complete with a drive thru.

The American chain has already seen plans to take over the nearby old White Bear pub on the Tingley Interchange turned down five times - but the latest submissions show their desperation to open a new restaurant near Junction 28 of the M62.

Outline planning permission, which was submitted earlier this year, reveals how the new McDonald's could look. If it's given the green light, a children's play area will be built outside the main entrance, while a two-lane drive thru entrance will snake around the back of the outlet.

Around a dozen objection letters have been filed against the plans, with local residents suggesting that traffic will increase and that there will be major problems with litter.

'This is a terrible proposal'

Natalie Hall said: "Let's be honest... we all enjoy a McDonald's now and again but do we really need another one when there is one at White Rose, Birstall [and] Asda at Morley?"

Andrew Edon also had a number of concerns. He said: "I am very unhappy at the idea of a McDonald's being built here. They are extremely unhealthy, unsightly and will bring a lot of unwanted traffic and rubbish to the street."

Alex Wilson didn't hold back with his views either.

He said: "This is a terrible proposal. A McDonald's here is going cause major issues with traffic backing up, both in and out of the town.

Meanwhile, Joanne Drake posed a pertinent question.

"There is already 2 McDonald's in Morley. Do we really need another one?" asked the Morley resident.

Karen Griffiths raised concerns about the proximity of the fast food restaurant to local schools.

She said: "Given that there is so much focus on obesity and the government and schools are continuously trying to instil healthy eating into the mindset of families I do find it worrying the proposed restaurant will be 900m from a local primary school."

There was one letter supporting the proposed scheme though.

Paul Handley said: "A new McDonald's on the old Harvester site will bring employment to the local area, and will enable those who live in the Wide Lane vicinity to be able to walk to the restaurant instead of having to drive or take a bus to one miles away.

"I see this as a positive step."

The plans for the Morley McDonald's come at the same time as the US chain are looking to open a fourth branch in Leeds city centre, with a unit on Bond Street under consideration.
