Plans for new low-carbon community near Dunbar out for consultation

Plans for a new 54-acre low-carbon community featuring around a hundred homes for key workers and designed around a monument to one of East Lothian’s most famous sons have gone out for consultation.

The Hallhill development at DunBear park aims to create a community of affordable, low emission homes for public service staff including care, NHS and police workers centred around a tribute to naturalist John Muir.

Developers say the project - which also includes a variety of retail, leisure, office and care facilities - will adopt “innovative low carbon technology to generate renewable heat and power on site,” ensuring minimal impact on the environment.

Plans for industrial and storage units and a nursery are also included in the consultation document.

Hallhill Developments ltd spokesman Ken Ross said: “We are delighted to be putting forward our proposals to the local community for this exciting low carbon development and look forward to its involvement in shaping these proposals.

“DunBear Park will assist in creating jobs and delivering much-needed housing for key workers. It will also assist in supporting the construction-led recovery from the current crisis.”

He added: “We are seeking to deliver an exemplar development, which not only Dunbar, but East Lothian and Scotland can be proud of. The support of the community will be crucial in achieving this.”

The five-metre DunBear steel sculpture, designed by Kelpies creator Andy Scott, was unveiled last year.

Muir, who was born in the the town in 1838, helped establish the National Parks system in the United States, famously petitioning congress for the creation of Yosemite National Park.

The consultation takes place online on June 3 from 2pm-8pm.
