Plans for new Lidl store gets approval in Derry

An application to bring a new Lidl store to Derry is gathering pace.

The supermarket giant is planning to relocate a store near to a main city centre route.

An application for the relocation of the existing Lidl supermarket from its current location on Buncrana Road was given the green light on Thursday.

The new site for the budget supermarket would see it located at the junction of Springtown Road and Buncrana Road.

At a planning committee meeting of the Derry and Strabane District Council, councillors heard how entry to the new store would ease congestion on the busy Buncrana Road.

It is understood that Lidl will retain its current store in the city for storage purposes.

The proposed store will be 2,217 sq. metres with a 1,420 sq. metre sales area.

Meanwhile, the site will also see Lidl invest more than €8 million in the local community and create 10 new permanent jobs as well as 20 construction jobs.

A spokesperson for Lidl said they hope to begin construction on the site later this year, with the view to opening the new store in 2021.

Speaking about the site, Christopher Speers, Regional Property Executive for Lidl Northern Ireland, commented: “We welcome the decision to approve our application on the Buncrana Road in Derry, and are eager to support the local community with significant investment, job creation and the highest quality at the best prices when we begin trading.”
