Plans for new hotel at Devon amusement site which burnt down

A new 80-bed hotel has been planned on the site of one of North Devon's biggest fires.

CMS Architects have applied to develop the site of the former Golden Coast Amusements in Ilfracombe, which caught fire back in 2004.

A "branded hotel operator" would use the five-story building, but no further details on who that might be have been released, Devon Live reported.

The fire which tore through the amusements 15 years ago was tackled by more than 65 firefighters, which has laid derelict ever since and is widely considered an eyesore to the town.

The design and access statement submitted with the plans says: "The main access in to the hotel is off Wilder Road at ground floor level, with a service entrance and lower ground floor level located off the subsidiary road to the Museum.

"The ground floor accommodates the communal facilities such as reception, cafe / bar and restaurant, in addition to the service areas such as laundry, maintenance and staff accommodation.

"The guest bedroom accommodation is then laid across the upper floors to the site, arranged in such as way as to maximise views across Ilfracombe and Jubiliee Gardens, whilst minimising visual impact on adjoining buildings, views and vistas."

It says the design of the building would "respond to the strong vertical emphasis of the Victorian style buildings that typify Ilfracombe".
