Plans for new Costa Coffee drive-thru and McDonalds confirmed for A38

Coffee chain Costa Coffee has announced that they are planning to open a drive-thru on the A38 near Exeter.

18 months ago planning permission was granted for two new restaurant units with drive-through lanes on land to the north of the existing Esso petrol station, Spar retail shop, and the Route 5 American Diner.

Alongside Costa, McDonalds was earmarked as a tenant for the site near Exeter Racecourse.

In August, the burger chain confirmed their intention to take up a unit after submitting applications to display adverts at the site.

Now, Costa Coffee have joined them with their own applications to display signage.

Teignbridge District Council will determine the fate of the two advertising applications at a later date, with McDonald’s three applications still awaiting a decision as well.

Planning permission for the new restaurants and drive-thrus was given the go ahead in 2018, with officers citing reasons such as no increase in overall traffic as a result of the proposed development as positives for the plans.
