Plans for new 120-bed student flat development in Dalry submitted

Plans have been submitted for a new student flat development with 120 beds in Dalry.

The flats in Murieston Crescent would replace a disused Masonic hall and an old wireworks building.

Maven property has lodged a new planning application with Edinburgh city council after concerns were raised about the previous design.

Documents from Susan Stephen Architects say it will have full provision for cycle parking and a historic date stone on the existing building will be retained.

The new plans would have less disruption for neighbours, the architects say.

The documents said: "The new building will provide high quality accommodation and amenity space for 120 students.

"A planning application for Student Accommodation on the site was granted in February 2018; however, for a number of technical reasons, an alternative approach is required to ensure the building can comply with mandatory life safety measures, statutory access and wayleaves along with a reduction in removal of earth off site minimising disruption to neighbours and the local road network."

The architects continue: "The existing derelict buildings on the site will be demolished.

"The proposals consist of a 6 storey building addressing Murieston Crescent with a 5 storey wing extending back into the site."

Design of the front of the building would incorporate "positive characteristics" of the nearby tenements.
