Plans for more Dumbarton roadworks postponed due to ongoing disruption

Plans for more major roadworks in Dumbarton have been postponed due to the nightmare conditions caused by the ongoing works.

Gas distribution company SGN revealed to the Lennox Herald that works which were set to go ahead in July have now been put on hold to minimise the disruption.

Nightmare roadworks currently being carried out in Dumbarton East for the next four months are causing major disruptions for residents and business owners.

The project - which is also being carried out by SGN - is expected to take 17 weeks to complete.

The gas company had additional plans to carry out works on Glasgow Road near to Morrisons supermarket.

This has now been postponed.

Dumbarton business owner David Mckernan, of HBR Accident Recovery and Repair in Castlegreen Street, previously told how the project to replace a gas pipe could be devastating for his business.

A Dumbarton East coffee shop owner also told how two suppliers have refused to deliver during the works, describing the situation as “potentially catastrophic”.

David Mckernan, of HBR told us this week how the work is already impacting his business.

He said: “It is already a nightmare. We have had 20 jobs cancelled this week. People are just not willing to sit in the traffic.”

Glasgow Road, one of the main routes in and out of Dumbarton, is currently closed in both directions at the Castlegreen Street and Greenhead Road junctions for six weeks.

Work will then take place from May 28 at Glasgow Road’s junction with Castlegreen Street and Greenhead Road. Due to the position of the gas main, Glasgow Road will be temporarily closed both ways at this junction.

Castlegreen Street and Greenhead Road will also remain closed.

From July 9, Glasgow Road, Castlegreen Street and Greenhead Road will be reopened.

From then, they will be working in Castlegreen Street near the fire station for eight week with temporary two-way traffic lights in place while they work.

A spokesman from SGN said: “Prior to our emergency work in Glasgow Road, Dumbarton, we had planned to upgrade the gas network further east along Glasgow Road near Morrisons.

“This project was due to begin in June or July and has now been put on hold. We will revisit the planning for our project to upgrade the gas network this summer in consultation with the local authority.”
