Plans for major overhaul of Leeds bus station - inside and out

Leeds bus station is set to undergo a major transformation in the near future - but transport chiefs want to hear your thoughts on the proposed plans.

It has been admitted that as things stand the bus station 'does not provide a fitting arrival for a major city', but it is anticipated that this could all change by March 2021.

The picture above reveals the improvements that could be made in a bid to make the bus station lighter and more spacious.

The canopies at either end of the building will be ripped out, with new translucent roofs installed on both York Street and Dyer Street. New cladding will also be erected, with new steps and a ramp laid out on the pavement.

Perhaps the biggest changes of all are reserved for inside though.

The main concourse will become far less cluttered and there are also plans to enhance the shops inside.

The waiting areas will get an overhaul too, with bus stand numbers to be clearly displayed and the seats will also be relaigned. All of the automatic doors and windows where the buses pull up are also likely to be upgraded.

Audio travel information will be available at each bus stand, while new flooring and lighting will make it easier to navigate around the bus station.

You can submit your views on the plans by visiting the West Yorkshire Combined Authority website. The public consultation period will remain open until Monday, November 4.

The proposed changes come in response to multi-million pound plans to remodel the city centre to make it better for bus travel.

The Headrow is currently undergoing a year-long improvement scheme, while detailed proposals to modify the area around Leeds Corn Exchange were recently released.

The blueprints for Leeds bus station follow on from a multi-million transformation of the city's train station, which has seen a transparent roof and gold panels installed.

The ticket barriers have also been improved, while a number of other alterations are still being made - such as the installation of 'platform zero'.
