Plans for luxury apartments at former convent site in Glasgow's south side rejected

Plans to demolish a former convent in Glasgow’s South Side to build luxury flats have been rejected.

Developers wanted to knock down the empty villa at 32 Mansionhouse Road in Langside to build 20 luxury flats over five storeys.

The villa was previously used as a convent with residential accommodation for the Sisters of Bon Seocours - which is currently being developed by CALA homes - until they moved elsewhere.

A design statement for the demolition argues that the new development would a "positive contribution to the streetscape" and that the existing villa "is of no architectural merit or importance".

Developers have earmarked the Langside property for luxury apartments due to the area becoming "increasingly fashionable in recent years".

But Glasgow City Council planners rejected the plans on the grounds that they would be detrimental to the local area and said that there was no justification for knocking down the villa.

Their report says that the apartments would be detrimental to the local area, would result in overlooking and loss of privacy to existing neighbouring properties and would result in the loss of protected Open Space.

It also adds that it would result in the loss of significant mature trees which aren’t owned by the development.

The developers will now be given the opportunity to appeal the decision.
