Plans for house in multiple occupation in Sunderland suburb withdrawn after neighbour objections

Plans for a four-bed house in multiple occupation (HMO) in a Sunderland suburb have been withdrawn following objections from neighbours.

HMOs refer to properties such as a house split into separate bedsits, a shared house/flat or a hostel.

In January, applicant PJD Properties lodged plans with Sunderland City Council to convert a family home in Chatsworth Street.

During consultation, several objections were lodged from neighbours alongside a 24-signature petition.

One objector said the plans, if approved, would set a "dangerous precedent" due to existing parking pressures and permit restrictions linked to the nearby Sunderland Royal Hospital.

While another objector's statement said rising numbers of HMOs had caused issues with rubbish collections and loud music.

Other fears included an extra four cars battling for space on the street, with "frustration and friction between residents and HMO occupants" due to parking issues.

Following discussions with the applicant's agent a bid to withdraw the plans was lodged in in April and formally confirmed the following month.
