Plans for Gallagher Premiership and Guinness PRO14 clubs to play each other in grand final - reports

The Guinness PRO14 and Gallagher Premiership could soon have an annual grand final to crown the winner of the two leagues.

That's just one possibility as CVC look set to complete a deal for shareholding in the PRO14 in the next few weeks - with the private equity firm already holding a 27% shareholding of the Premiership.

In an exclusive report in the Times , they report that CVC have a number of potential plans for the two leagues - including a grand final between the winners of the two leagues.

The report states that this idea has already been discussed with both leagues.

Another possibility is a fully-formed play-off that would see the two leagues combine at the end of the season.

This is just the latest in CVC's bid to impose itself on rugby's biggest competitions. As well as the Premiership and PRO14, they are also understood to have tabled a £500million offer to the Six Nations for a 30% share.

Fans of F1 might remember CVC as the owners of the motorsport between 2006 and 2017. As owners, they took the sport from ITV to Sky Sports - with Bernie Ecclestone employed to run the business for them.

Bob Fernley, who was then deputy team principal of Force India, accused CVC during that time of "raping the sport".

In 2016, he described CVC's relationship with F1 with the following damning statement: "All their actions have been taken to extract as much money from the sport as possible and put as little in as possible."
