Plans for former Edinburgh Debenhams now to include luxury spa and private dining room

New plans for the former Debenhams store in Edinburgh have shown the site will boast some pretty impressive features when finished.

Closing for good during the pandemic, the Princes Street department store saw proposals accepted last year to turn the huge unit into a new hotel.

Given the green light by the council in 2021, the site will see the interior completely gutted out and rebuilt, while retaining the current listed features.

However, in the last month, some alterations and changes have been made to the initial application after further research and consultations were carried out.

According to Hospitality, Architecture & Interiors, the transformation will now include alterations to the health suite and spa planned, as well as a few differences in the original blueprint for the roof top bar.

Set to offer a range of beauty treatments and "experiences", the spa will now be expanded in size, as well as having its own Rose Street access for clients.

Proposals stated: "During the technical design stage a spa specialist was appointed and in collaboration with the client and design team developed their proposals.

"It was felt that the spa would benefit from street presence and additional area to provide a more varied offering of treatments and experiences. It is now proposed that the spa extends up into the commercial unit fronting Rose Street.

"The area is now proposed to be a casual spa cafe area, spa reception with treatment areas to the rear of the unit. While being linked to the ground floor spa experience, treatment areas and changing facilities via the dedicated stair abutting Rose Street South Lane.

In addition, the historic Gladstone Library inside the Princes Street site had initially been expected to be a guest room, but will now be given a new purpose.

Keeping the historic value and feel, the room will be replaced with a private dining suite and relaxation room for guests staying in the hotel.

Plans continued: "The consented scheme indicates a guestroom in this location but it was felt this important feature warranted being located in a more public room.

"As a result the guestroom is proposed to be replaced with the Gladstone Library Suite which will provide a public room for guests to relax in.

"This room will also provide the flexibility to be used as a private dining area and be coupled with the guestrooms on the same floor to provide a communal gathering space for block bookings."

When works begin, the building will become a 207-bedroom hotel, which was described by councillors at the time of its approval as being a more "upscale" venue.

Plans were welcomed for a number of features, one of the most popular being the rooftop bar which will be constructed as part of the development.

As well as facing over to Edinburgh Castle, the corner section of the mainly glass bar will also look onto the Firth of Forth, providing some panoramic views of the city.
