Plans for Falkirk nightclub to open at midday and serve food put on hold

A Falkirk nightclub was told to come back with more detail about its plans to open during the day to serve food and show sport.

Falkirk Council’s Licensing Board was asked to approve the Maniqui nightclub - previously known as Storm - opening from noon every day.

That was one of several changes the Maniqui’s owners, father and son Steven and Stuart Dougall, wanted to make to the venue’s licence, having bought the nightclub in June last year.

Mr Dougall told members that they wanted to make more use of Horizons lounge bar to serve food and show live sports as well as introducing new activities such as ‘bongo bingo’ and karaoke.

Solicitor Robbie McElroy said they were “looking to create a wider range of options and create more of a hybrid venue”.

He said: “They want to be able to open Horizons bar to increase the daytime use and the food offering to create something beyond the nightclub.”

But Mr Dougall was unable to give councillors any details of what type of food would be sold and what kind of sports would be shown.

The Licensing Board convener, Niall Coleman, said they were not unsupportive and appreciated the investment the family had made since they took over.

However, he said, the board needed much more detail about what they planned to do during the day, in particular with regard to children and young people’s access.

Councillors were concerned that children would be in a mixing with adults watching horse-racing.

Mr Coleman said he was “genuinely sorry” they could not support the plans at the moment as he knew that would delay them.

But he advised the owners to look again at their plans and return to the board with simpler but more detailed proposals.
