Plans for electric car charging zone at Renfrewshire service station put forward

Plans to create an electric vehicle (EV) charging zone at an Elderslie service station have been submitted to Renfrewshire Council.

Motor Fuel Group wants to introduce six charge points, a canopy and substation enclosure at the facility in the village’s Main Road.

The company has asked for planning permission for the works, which would see a jet wash machine removed from the site.

Carney Sweeney, a planning consultancy firm acting on its behalf, explained the proposal in a covering letter to the local authority.

Rahma Dwimunali, assistant planner, said in the letter: “Motor Fuel Group’s proposal to install new EV charging points at Elderslie service station should be considered positively in light of the national context and the demand for the necessary infrastructure to support electric vehicle use across the UK.

“The proposals would contribute positively to the existing EV charging network, to the benefit of those utilising the strategic highway network surrounding the application site.

“The proposals will enhance the existing offer at the service station, without compromising the efficient operation of the facility.”

The letter also said the plans do not raise concerns regarding “adverse impact” on amenity or conflict in relation to surrounding land use.

It said the area would be “well-lit”, meaning there should be no issues with anti-social behaviour or from a “natural surveillance perspective”.

The letter continued: “In terms of design, the proposed EV charging area has been carefully planned to positively integrate with the existing service station operation.

“The charging facility offers a modern design approach, which is uncluttered and fit for purpose.

“The proposals will be Equalities Act compliant, offering dropped kerbs and other associated measures to ensure equal ease of access for all.”

The council will make a decision on the application at a later date.
