Plans for Edinburgh supermarket to get huge new Costa drive-thru

Coffee shop giant Costa has submitted a planning proposal to Edinburgh City Council to erect a new drive-thru store. The huge new Costa would have a floor area of 167sqm (1,800sq ft).

The proposed cafe would be situated at 102 Pilton Drive, Edinburgh within the Morrisons car park at Ferry Road.

The developers say the new Costa is to have both an indoor cafe seating area and an outdoor seating space.

Those who wish to use the drive-through are to be given their drinks and snacks through “a hatch to the rear of the building.”

Plans were submitted on July 28 and are currently awaiting an assessment from Edinburgh City Council.

A planning statement to the council states: “Our brief was to assess the feasibility of locating a small drive-thru coffee shop within the existing customer car park, minimising the loss of car parking spaces and providing the optimum layout in terms of access and visibility.”

The developers admit that if given the go-ahead, the new Costa would result in “the loss of 51 spaces parking spaces within the store car park. “

However, they argue that: “The remaining car park has sufficient capacity for the current use of the store and the anticipated use of the drive-thru coffee shop. “
