Plans for 36 new flats in Clifton have been approved by Nottingham City Council.
The plans for affordable rental homes in Southchurch Court will replace more than 60 garages which were built to serve the nearby high-rise block of flats in Clifton.
Nottingham City Council said the decision on the plans was approved subject to call in - if it is not called in for scrutiny, the plans will come into force tomorrow (October 22).
Council documents say plans include the redevelopment of the former Eastglade School and Southchurch Court garages for the new council housing.
Earlier this year, residents backed the plans, saying it is "what the area needs".
Carol Attridge, 67, a charity shop manager of Clifton, described the garages as 'an eyesore', saying "something needs to be done about them".
She said: "It will bring more people in which is a good idea because there’s always a call for lots of flats in the area.
"There’s always people waiting for them so more council housing is always good."
Martin Thornton, 55, of Clifton, said: "It's a good situation for the area. More council houses on disused sites that are an eyesore is a good thing.
"It's much needed for the area and will help keep people needing social housing in Clifton rather than having to move elsewhere in the city."
The council said at the time that the site had "become a target for anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping".
In February the garages were being emptied, with leases terminated, and tenants are being offered an alternative garage within close vicinity, where possible.
