Plans for Bristol route to go one-way and major changes to roundabout

Plans for major changes to a Redland route and roundabout are proceeding after a positive consultation.

Bristol City Council proposes to make Redland Road one-way between the Elmgrove Road junction and the roundabout with Zetland Road and South Road — with traffic permitted towards the roundabout.

The scheme would see other changes close to the roundabout, including speed cushions on South Road and an extra parking space on Zetland Road.

Last year a public consultation prompted 99 responses, with 60 supportive, 22 opposed to the plans and 17 not explicitly in either category.

A council spokesperson said: "The catchment for this consultation included Cotham Gardens School and a large number of parents whose children attend the school responded.

"Since the scheme has received overall support and has the support of the local councillors, we are now proceeding with the legal element of the scheme.

"The one-way, speed cushions and changes to parking restrictions which will be required to deliver this scheme are all subject to a statutory process which can take six to 12 months to complete."

Despite the majority of supportive responses, the scheme is yet to be confirmed because regulations require a final opportunity be given for locals to submit objections and comments.

Dates on the statutory consultation are still being finalised and notices will be posted to inform locals of the process, the council added.

Its spokesperson said: “The aim of these plans is to make the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists, given the history of collisions and proximity to the primary school [Cotham Gardens school] on Elmgrove Road, as well as redirecting some through traffic away from Redland Road onto more suitable routes.

“This work was started after community campaigns and with the endorsement of local members and citizens and local stakeholders have already shared their views through two rounds of public consultation over the proposed changes.

“The design for the roundabout has since been revised and the scheme expanded to incorporate a new one-way system on Redland Road, from Elmgrove Road to the junction with Zetland Road and South Road.

“Statutory consultation on elements of the scheme, including traffic regulation orders around the one-way system, road safety features and parking scheme changes will now take place and citizens, business owners and school parents will have another chance to support or object to the scheme formally during this process.’’
