Plans for Bigg Market ‘New York loft style’ bar and restaurant selling 20” pizzas and 20 cocktails

Plans for a ‘New York loft art gallery style’ bar and restaurant in Newcastle ’s Bigg Market have been revealed.

The city centre venue is set to be named Twenty Twenty after their intention to sell 20” pizzas and 20 cocktails.

A licensing application lodged with Newcastle City Council says the bar “is not a student venue” and will be aimed at customers “who are prepared to pay for quality and wait for the production of bespoke drinks”.

The applicant, Twenty Twenty Bars Ltd, said the intention is to be “child friendly” during the day, with family events including pizza tots toddler sessions to be held in the basement.

The licensing documents say: “The name of the premises comes from their intention to offer a core range of 20” pizzas and 20 cocktails.

“The pizza range is important to the concept and its New York Loft Art Gallery style.

“The range of 20 cocktails comprises classics, modern inventions and some of the premises’ own design.

“The premises will offer a range of continental and quality bottled and canned beers, lagers and ciders, with a focus on craft and small brewery short runs.

There will be a good range of spirits, based around the ingredient lists for a small range of cocktails, as well as a range of vodkas and gins.”

The application says the venue will trade differently at different times of day.

It says: “Through the day the premises will cater to shoppers, tourists and office workers.

“Up until 7pm the intention is to be child and dog friendly and to be a venue families will be happy to go to, including ‘make your own pizza’ for the kids’ menu and events based around families in the basement, such as pizza tots toddler sessions.

“After 5pm, we will attract more office workers, tourists and users of the nighttime economy. Food will be available throughout.

“On a night, and after 11pm, this is a ‘wind down’ premises, offering hot food and refreshment for consumption on the premises, with some takeaway for customers having dined in the premises.”

It adds: “The target clientele of the premises will be 21+. This is not a student venue. Our desired clientele will be the type of customer who uses Pleased to Meet You, Tiger Hornsby, Banyan or The Alchemist.

“Customers who are prepared to pay for quality, and wait for the production of bespoke drinks.”

The proposed new venue would become the latest addition to the Bigg Market, which in the past two years has seen the opening of The WC, a wine bar in the former public toilets, cult burger restaurant Meat:Stack and upmarket eatery Hibou Blanc.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, the area has had a reputation for rowdy nights out - but is going through something of a transformation.
