Plans for around 1,900 homes on sites around Dublin axed by council

Plans to build nearly 2,000 homes on sites around Dublin have been axed by the council.

Existing residents and city councillors objected to plans to build 1,900 homes on the grounds of several old industrial sites across the capital.

The original project suggested that up to 3,500 homes would be constructed on these vacant and underused sites.

The decision not to rezone four of the 20 sites has now reduced the number of homes that could be built to just under 1,600 according to The Irish Times.

One of the reasons for the objections was over the type of homes that were being built and the height of sites.

Speaking about the objections, John Lyons of the Independents said: "It mutes their voices, it most certainly hampers elected representatives as Dublin City Council haven't a chance to engage in the planning system.

"It seems to my mind that we have a planning system that is development-led, but it's most certainly developer-favoured."
