Plans for affordable homes spark NHS concerns

Plans submitted for 28 affordable apartments have sparked concerns for the local NHS.

An application for the homes, which are set to be built on an area of land off Baxter's Lane, in Sutton, was submitted to St Helens Council. The site is part of Fishwick Industrial Estate, and has remained unused for a number of years.

Plans for 93 homes on the land were previously approved in 2016, the permission for which has now expired. According to Hive Land & Planning, who submitted the plans, all of the apartments will be classed as "affordable housing."

Part of a design and access statement submitted reads: "Each block is to be two storeys in height, with one block fronting Baxter's Lane containing eight apartments and the second block is positioned within the site at a right angle, which contains 20 apartments".

The idea of 28 new homes in the area has sparked some concern among those already living in the area, who believe a strain will be placed on local infrastructure. One person said: "There's so many new flats and houses springing up but what about us already here? We're struggling to get doctor and dentist appointments for our kids as it is."

Another added: "They are filling the town with apartments and new builds but where’s the doctors dentist etc? They are stretched as it is."

Standard consultation of the plans to the public lasts until Wednesday, December 7, with a determination deadline set for January 31, 2023.
