Plans for a new secure inpatient unit in Maghull

Outline plans for a new low secure inpatient unit to support people with learning disabilities have been submitted to Sefton Council.

Turley, on behalf of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, are preparing to request planning permission for the LSU - which would be situated in Maghull .

According to documents on the local authority's website, the proposed scheme will comprise the construction of 'a 40 bed Low Secure Learning Disability Unit (LSU)' on land to the east of Villas Road.

Vehicular and pedestrian access to the site will be via Villas Road both during construction and once the development is operational.

The report goes on to say: "There are some existing ecological and landscape features on the site and immediate surrounding area; those which are to be retained will be protected during the construction phase, including via the use of Root Protection Areas.

"The site is located to the south east of the Maghull Health Park. It currently comprises open farmland in the ownership of Mersey Care.

"The site is bounded to the north by the former HMP Kennet facility which ceased its existing use in 2016. To the east the site is surrounded by open countryside which is identified as safeguarded land (MN8.2) within the Sefton Local Plan (SLP), leading to the M58 Motorway.

"To the south the site is bounded by open countryside and Maghull Lane/School Lane. To the west the site is bounded by Villas Road and the Maghull Health Park (MHP)."

Turley is currently seeking an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening Opinion from Sefton Council.

The 'appearance, layout, scale and landscaping' related to the proposed scheme will be confirmed at a later stage.

Construction is expected to commence in 2020/2021, with completion by late 2022/early 2023.
