Plans for a new hotel at a North Shields shopping destination have been revealed

Plans for a new hotel at Royal Quay's have been revealed and the developer says its an "excellent opportunity".

WD Chatham Ltd is behind plans to build a three storey, 70 room hotel next to the existing Premier Inn.

A design and access statement submitted to the council said that no additional parking spaces are planned.

And, if the scheme gets given the go-ahead the 616 spaces available at the shopping destination will be cut to 548.

However, the document claims the current provision is "underused", and the hotel's guests would park in the evening after shoppers have gone home.

It also said the hotel would be good for the local economy creating more jobs for the area.

"The proposed hotel represents an excellent opportunity to enhance the site at Royal Quays Outlet Centre and the wider locality to meet the changing requirements of the hospitality and tourist industry," the statement added.

"The site is surrounded by leisure uses and is in close proximity to the neighbouring Port of Tyne.

"We consider the development achieves appropriate urban regeneration, creates future employment opportunities, has respect for the setting, is highly sustainable utilising an existing underused car park and sharing the car park over a 24 hour period."

North Tyneside Council's planning committee is set to decide on the plans in late August.
