A former dog track could be demolished to make way for executive homes after plans were given the green light by council bosses.
Developers had asked Durham County Council for permission to build 47 houses on the site of Easington Greyhound Stadium site, off Sunderland Road.
The proposals had attracted criticism from Easington Village Parish Council, which claimed the village would 'not be able to cope with the additional infrastructure required'.
But a report for the council raised no issues with education provision, flooding or pollution.
And the only request from highways officers related to the length of driveways proposed for the homes.
Speaking for developer Charles Church, Adam McVickers, told today's (Tuesday, April 9) meeting of the county council's Area Planning Committee: "The very specific use of the site meant it does not lend itself to alternative uses.

"As a result, it has remained an unattractive eyesore.
"This application represents a significant opportunity to regenerate the site, meeting current and future housing needs of the county."
