Plans for £40m Birmingham office block revealed

Plans for the £40 million next phase of one of Birmingham's largest commercial developments have been unveiled.

5 Centenary Square, in Broad Street, will reach nine storeys and have around 170,100 sq ft of office space alongside new landscaping and public realm.

New plans have been lodged with Birmingham City Council for the complex which will also have a roof-top terrace, parking for 68 vehicles and 64 cycles and changing facilities and lockers.

The building is being developed speculatively with no end occupier referenced in the new planning application.

It is the third phase of the nine-acre Arena Central project opposite the Library of Birmingham and follows 1 Centenary Square, the new head office of HSBC UK which opened last year, and 3 Arena Central.

Around 3,600 staff from HM Revenue & Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions are due to take up residence in that building following its completion in 2020.

Like 1 Centenary Square and 3 Arena Central, this latest proposal has been designed by London-based Make Architects - the practice behind famous Birmingham building The Cube.

If approved, it will occupy the corner plot at the junction of Bridge Street opposite the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Construction is expected to take two years and support the equivalent of 240 full-time jobs.
