Plans for 399 home North Tyneside housing estate set to be given the go-ahead

Plans for hundreds of new homes in North Shields are set to be given the go-ahead.

North Tyneside Council gave outline planning permission to Miller Homes and Northern Trust Company to build up to 400 houses at the West Chirton Industrial Estate South, on Norham Road in 2017.

The proposals will go before North Tyneside Council's planning committee on July 9, with planning officers describing the plans as 'acceptable'.

At present the 35-acre Norham Road site is a mix of disused industrial units and grassland.

The application was previously recommended for approval as officers said there was no reasonable expectation of the site returning into business use.

Now the developer has come back to the council with a 'reserved matters' application for the layout, appearance and landscaping of the scheme.

It shows plans for 399 homes, these will be a mix of two, three and four bedroom houses, with eight of these, or 2%, being classed as affordable housing.

As part of the estate 5.9 acres will be used to create public spaces.

Miller Homes say the site already has habitats for both the Dingy Skipper and Grayling butterflies and more trees and wildflowers will be planted to help encourage insect life as part of the development.
