Plans for 236 East Lothian homes set for approval despite objections

New plans could see 236 homes constructed in East Lothian, along with a commercial development and green spaces.

The proposals, submitted by Stefano Smith Planning, would bring the development to Newcraighall with a ‘mix of private and affordable homes’. The potential site sits north east of Edinburgh, just east of Glennie Road.

Developers say the site is an ‘ideal location’ for a residential development’ and will create a ‘vibrant community’. Despite already having four objections from locals and no supporting comments, the plans have been pre-approved by Edinburgh Council subject to an additional consultation.

Those behind the application say they specialise in the development of affordable homes, and have done so ‘all over Scotland’. In 2015, planning permission in principle was granted for new housing and mixed-use facilities on the Newcraighall site.

They say the development will ‘support strong communities’, adding: “The development will support a rich and pleasurable quality of life for inhabitants and the wider community.

“It will also connect people and places by providing ease of movement within and through the development.”

Developers say affordable homes will be ‘well in excess’ of the minimum 25 per cent requirement, being closer to approximately 75 per cent of the site. They’ve added that the Newcraighall development hopes to become a ‘healthier and happier place to live, work and visit’.

Also included in the plans are a new open green, Linear Park. They hope this will become a meeting space for the community, adding: “The addition of these green spaces will allow for increased physical health of the community.”

Sitting within walking distance to Queen Margaret University, the homes would also be a short walk from Musselburgh Station which connects residents to Waverley in Edinburgh as well as through to Glasgow.
