Plans drawn up to convert vacant Glasgow city centre office block into swanky hotel

Plans have been drawn up to convert a vacant Glasgow city centre office block into a swanky hotel.

International hotel chain Melia are looking to launch their first branded hotel in Scotland at 250 St Vincent Street, at the corner of Douglas Street in the city centre.

The Category B listed building has been lying vacant since the beginning of 2018, having latterly operated as an office for the Royal Bank Of Scotland from the 1980's until 2016.

The plans, published by Glasgow City Council's Planning Department on December 3, detail that the 149 room Melia Innside hotel will feature a gym, restaurant and bar.

The hotel will "reinstate the grandeur of the building", which was constructed in 1878, with the hotel "creating a vibrant new destination and bringing activation to this part of Blythswood Hill".

Plans for the hotel include for 113 Standard Rooms (The Playroom), seven Premium Rooms (The Studio), 27 Suite Rooms and two premium ‘townhouse’ suite rooms - located on the upper most floors with "commanding views" over Glasgow city centre.

With architects Faulkner Browns Architects of Newcastle detailing plans to conduct internal and external alterations and erect an upper three storey extension to allow for the change of use.

If the plans come to fruition, it will see the building return to its original use, having been designed as a hotel named ‘Macleans Hotel’ by architect James Thomson.
